An asteroid is named after ISU Professor Sergey Yazev
7 February 2024

The name of Professor Sergey Yazev is assigned to an asteroid moving around the Sun within the Main Asteroid Belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The announcement was published on February 5 in the Bulletin of the Working Group of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) “Small Bodies Nomenclature”. Now the astronomical object, that only had the digital designation 591861, received its own name – Sergeyyazev.

The asteroid was discovered on January 6, 2008 by the famous Russian astronomer Timur Kryachko, who has discovered more than 60 asteroids and more than 20 meteorites. After clarifying the orbit, the celestial object was assigned the preliminary number 2014 GE18 and then the final one – 591861.

Timur Kryachko used his right of discovery (according to the IAU rules) and chose the name for the asteroid – Sergeyyazev. The new name was unanimously approved by the IAU Working Group – astronomers from England, Germany, Spain, China, New Zealand, Russia, the USA, the Czech Republic, Uruguay and Japan.

The published Bulletin states that Sergey Arkturovich Yazev is a Siberian astronomer in the third generation, Irkutsk State University professor, director of ISU Astronomical Observatory, a solar physics expert, popularizer of astronomy (author of books, scripts, articles and TV pieces).

Interesting fact. Asteroid 6845 was named “Mansurova” in honor of Sergey Yazev's mother, astronomer Kira Sergeevna Mansurova, who worked at Irkutsk State University for many years. The name was suggested by the discoverer, famous astronomer Nikolai Chernykh, who studied at Irkutsk Pedagogical Institute and worked with the telescope of Irkutsk Astronomical Observatory.
