Geographical and Environmental dictation took place at ISU

Irkutsk State University acted as a venue for two large-scale educational events: international – Geographical dictation; All-Russian – Environmental dictation. The events took place on Sunday, November 19th.

Geographical dictation

Traditionally, in Irkutsk, the main offline platform of the event was at ISU Geography Faculty, which accommodated more than 150 participants, including school and university students, military service representatives. The faculty prepared a small concert for them: a guitar composition was presented by a student of the Faculty of Geography Zakhar Timokhin, an extract from “Irkutsk with us” by V.G. Rasputin was read by a student of the Faculty of Geography Dobrynya Fedorov, ISU Law Institute choir performed.

In the dictation, the participants answered 40 questions, including questions on the topic “Man and geography”, which was added in honor of the Teacher and Mentor Year (2023). The first part, consisting of 10 questions, is a “geographical likbez” [elimination of geographical illiteracy] based on well-known facts from geography. The second part, consisting of 30 questions, is more difficult, it required the use of imaginative thinking, logic and erudition.

Celebrities, friends of the Russian Geographical Society, traditionally read the questions of the dictation, this year – TV host and advisor of the Russian Geographical Society President on Information Policy Anastasia Chernobrovina and People’s Artists of Russia Dmitry Kharatyan and Oleg Gazmanov.

Sayana Vologzhina, Dean of ISU Faculty of Geography:

“We have been participating in the Geographical Dictation every year since its first year and for the ninth year we have been hosting all people interested and passionate about geography. Despite the steady decrease in the number of participants at our site in recent years, due to the opening of new platforms in Irkutsk, this year we have seen a spike in the number of participants. Our site was designed for 150 people, so everyone who was over this number had to be redirected to other sites. Such an interest in geographical dictation cannot but please us, because the action isn’t an exam, but it is a great opportunity to test your general knowledge of geography, geographical erudition, expand your horizons and take part in an exciting event that unites geography lovers from all over the world.”

The results of the geographical dictation will be published on the official Dictation website on December 12th. And anyone who has not had time to test their knowledge of geography can write an extra version of the dictation, which will be available until December 1st, 2023 on https://dic.rgo.ru/.

Environmental dictation

After the Geographical dictation at ISU Faculty of Geography, those who wished wrote an Environmental dictation aimed at ecological culture formation, popularizing environmental knowledge and increasing the level of environmental literacy.

At ISU Faculty of Geography, 63 participants were divided into categories: teenagers (12-18 years old), over 18 years old (non-ecologists) and over 18 years old (ecologists) – they answered 25 environmental questions.

Sayana Vologzhina, Dean of ISU Faculty of Geography:

“This was the first experience of conducting environmental dictation and, in general, it was a positive one for us. Everything was new since the approach of conducting an environmental dictation is radically different from conducting the geographical dictation. We registered the site to be able to accept the three categories of participants, but younger participants also came to the dictation, which is good news. The youngest were 9 years old, they were asked to write a dictation in the “Teenagers” category. Each category of participants had their own questions with different difficulty. As for the results – we will know it after December 2nd.”

In 2023, the environmental dictation is taking place for the fifth time. For the first time, ISU Faculty of Geography became an offline venue for it (environmental dictation is more focused on the remote format of participation).
