ISU Rector Alexander Schmidt took part in the Forum of Rectors of the Association of Universities of the Far East and Siberia of Russia and the North-Eastern Regions of China

ISU Rector Alexander Schmidt took part in the XIII Forum of Rectors of the Association of Universities of the Far East and Siberia of Russia and the North-Eastern Regions of China, which was held on September 26 in Harbin, China. One of the main results of the forum for ISU was the agreements reached that develop and strengthen cooperation between Irkutsk State University and Chinese universities in the educational and scientific sphere.

After the opening ceremony, the heads of Russian and Chinese universities endorsed their intentions to conclude a cooperation agreement by signature. Thus, Heilongjiang University and Shenyang University of Chemical Technology will become new partners of ISU. The first Chinese university is known as the forge for specialists in the Russian language – the delegation of Heilongjiang University has previously visited the ISU in May 2023. The second university is a multidisciplinary university, where, along with technical specializations, natural, economic, managerial, humanitarian and legal sciences are studied. Another point of interest for ISU is also the scientific research in the field of chemistry, which is conducted at the Shenyang University of Chemical Technology.

The Forum was held within the framework of the plenary and breakout sessions. The first breakout session “Cross-border cooperation of universities of the Russian Federation and China in the field of science and innovation” was opened by ISU Rector Alexander Schmidt, who presented a report to the community of university heads on promising areas of cooperation between ISU and partners from China.

Within the framework of the forum, Alexander Schmidt held meetings with the leadership of partner universities – Liaoning University and Anshan Normal University, where ISU students are currently on internships, as well as the Manchurian Institute of the Russian Language, whose students are currently on internship at ISU. The main point of the meetings was to discuss the possible expansion of the cooperation horizon.

At the forum Irkutsk State University was also represented by Yulia Elokhina, Head of the International Relations Department. She participated in the section “Cultural and youth exchanges between universities of the Russian Federation and China”, presenting the experience of ISU in building partnerships between Russian and Chinese universities and the role of cultural exchanges in this process to the university community of the two countries.
