The 17th of February is a milestone worth mentioning in the history of Irkutsk State University. Fifty years ago, ISU and the National University of Mongolia signed an agreement on “A joint complex research of the natural conditions and resources of the Selenga River Basin" (in accordance with the plan for cultural and scientific cooperation between the USSR and the Mongolian People’s Republic). The Soviet-Mongolian complex Khuvsgul expedition was organized and lasted until 1997, based on the document.
Irkutsk State University has improved its position in the ranking of the best universities in Russia compiled by the UniRank system and published in early February 2020. Among 373 Russian universities, ISU has moved up to 38th place (it was ranked in 56th place in 2019).
The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation supported three projects of ISU to establish new laboratories. Financial support for this purpose is more than 87 million rubles for 2020. The projects are planned to be implemented by 2024.
