Summer internship of ISU students at Heilongjiang University

Seven students of the Chinese studies department of the Institute of Philology, Foreign Languages and Media Communications of Irkutsk State University have completed a free summer internship at Heilongjiang University in Harbin. The programme was devoted to the theme “Chinese modernization through my eyes” and included both academic classes and a rich cultural programme.

During the trip, students not only sharpened their language skills, but also broadened their horizons in a wide variety of areas. A series of lectures and classes, devoted to the environmental policy of the PRC, the development of mechanical engineering and, of course, the achievements of Chinese cosmonautics, were held for the students.

Some of the students had previously been on a semester internship in Harbin and it was especially pleasant for them to return to the city they have grown fond of. The city opened up to me in a completely new way, as if I saw it from a different side.

The days of the internship in Harbin were filled with field trips. The students visited Harbin’s iconic sites – the City History Museum and the majestic St. Sophia Cathedral, which has long become the city’s landmark. But the group’s favourite place for recreation was Sun Island (太阳岛) – a huge park complex with a waterfall, elegant gardens and endless walking alleys.

During the field trips, the students were accompanied by Chinese volunteer students. They helped with translation and shared local atmosphere, which made the immersion into the environment as comfortable and natural as possible. The students also visited the city’s largest night market (师大夜市), where they tasted exotic treats: from sweet tofu and cakes with rose petals to octopus and durian.

There were also warm meetings with the past: the students rode bicycles along the legendary Stalin Embankment along the Songhua River and walked along the city’s main artery – Central Street (中央大街), where Russian souvenirs and traditional Chinese delicacies coexist side by side.

Everyone found leisure activities to their liking: some visited a cozy cat café and an Ocean Aquarium, while others discovered the Van Gogh Museum and ascended to the observation deck of the city’s highest point – the Dragon Tower (龙塔).

At the conclusion of the internship, the students defended their reports on the theme “Chinese modernization through my eyes”. At the end of the programme, a closing ceremony with commemorative souvenirs and certificates confirming successful completion of the course was held.

As the internship participants noted, the trip gave them invaluable experience – not just to learn the language, but to live it, to see the country from the inside, to communicate with native speakers and to feel the rhythm of modern China: these are emotions that cannot be obtained while attending a class.
