Professors of leading Korean universities visited ISU

An International Seminar “Russia and Korea: Academic & Cultural Dialogue” was held at the International Institute of Economics and Linguistics of Irkutsk State University. The event is aimed at strengthening cultural and academic ties between Russia and the Republic of Korea. The dialogue between the two countries has historically been built on deep traditions of Oriental studies, mutual interest in literature, art, cinema and many years of interuniversity partnership. This event was supported by the Representative Office of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Irkutsk and the Russian Embassy in Seoul.

Alexander Schmidt, Professor, Rector of ISU:

ISU has been a major centre for training specialists with the Korean language for almost 30 years. Research in the field of social, historical and linguistic sciences on the study of Korea, the Korean language and culture is conducted on at the university. In addition, ISU has extensive experience in implementing large-scale projects together with Korean partners, including well-known universities of the Republic of Korea. I am glad that today all participants have this wonderful opportunity to find out something new about Russia and the Republic of Korea.

The partner of this event was the Baikbong Research Institute (Seoul, Republic of Korea). Chairman Ra Jong Yil gave a welcoming speech and noted that Korea has recently achieved significant results in all areas and attracts special attention with its activities in various fields such as literature, cinema and music. However, he believes that this is not simply an achievement of Korea as such, but the result of the country’s openness and support of active exchanges. He also expressed hope that this meeting will serve as an opportunity for Korea and Russia to continue active exchanges and cooperation in all areas of culture and science.

Professors from leading Korean universities were among the members of the delegation. Among them were representatives of Seoul National University, Kyung Hee University and Yonsei University. In their reports, they covered topics devoted to contemporary Korean cinema, the influence of K-pop culture on the global stage, and classical Korean literature.

The event was attended by Professor Kim Chul, Scholar of Korean Language and Literature, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Korean Language and Literature (Yonsei University); Professor Chung Hyejean, Scholar of Film, Media, and Visual Culture, Professor of Cultural Studies (Kyung Hee University); Professor Koh Yunhwa, Sociologist of Music and Researcher in Cultural Industries, Co-Research Fellow of the Center for Hallyu Studies (Asia Center, Seoul National University).

The event was also attended by Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Irkutsk, Mr. Youn Changyong. The Consul General noted that he is glad that contacts have resumed for the first time in a long time and that the arrival of such an impressive delegation will contribute to the maintenance of scientific and educational ties. He thanked the leadership of ISU for the high level of event organization and expressed his hope that such meetings would be held on a regular basis.

The event meets the demand for expanding academic research and cultural exchange, facilitating the transfer of knowledge and the development of long-term cooperation between representatives of educational, scientific and public circles.
