Irkutsk State University entered the ranking of the world’s top universities in achieving sustainable development goals – QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025.
In the global list of 1744 institutions, ISU ranks 1251+. Among Russian universities (32 institutions listed in the ranking) ISU ranks 18th.
The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability has been compiled for the third time. Experts take into account three categories: Environmental Impact, Social Impact, and Governance.
Environmental Impact includes several lenses (groups of indicators): environmental education, environmental research, environmental sustainability.
The Social Impact indicator is determined by the contribution the university makes to taking care of the health and well-being of not only its students, but also society as a whole. The same category evaluates the university’s cooperation with other organizations to share knowledge and stimulate the educational growth of the region as a whole. The overall positive contribution of the university to the employability and opportunities: replenishment of the labor market with qualified personnel and raising employer reputation.
The Governance indicator is assessed by the degree of transparency of decision-making processes on issues important for the development of the university, how decisions relate to general ethics, and what role student representatives play in decision-making in the governing bodies of the university. Transparent financial reporting is also considered an important factor.
This year, of all the categories, ISU’s Social Impact category turned out to be the best among Russian universities – the eighth result, while in the world ranking the parameter that showed the highest result is the Governance category – the 573rd place.
Irkutsk State University is the only university in the Irkutsk region represented in the ranking. Together with ISU, 47 more world’s higher education institutions take the 1251+position.
Compared to last year, the number of participants in the ranking has increased by more than 300 universities. Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) has become the leader among Russian universities – it ranks 531st in the global ranking.
