Irkutsk State University is the only university in the region listed in the RAEX ranking of influential universities in Russia.
According to the ranking compilers, only objective statistics from Russian and foreign sources were used for the ranking. Four parameters were taken into account: popularity among young people, influence within the scientific community, interest from the online audience and influence on elite formation. The fourth parameter was the most significant for compiling the ranking.
Among 75 Russian universities, ISU ranked 58th. Irkutsk State University is the only university in Eastern Siberia included in the ranking. It should be noted that the authors of the analytical research of the ranking indicate that influential universities are extremely unevenly distributed across the country. The final list includes universities from 22 regions, which is slightly less than 25% of subjects of the Russian Federation. At the same time, almost 60% of the universities in the ranking are located in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Moscow has 31 influential universities, and St. Petersburg – 13.

Moscow State University was ranked as the most influential domestic university. The Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration is in second place. Third and fourth places were taken by St. Petersburg University, which has great influence in the scientific community, and the National Research University “Higher School of Economics”, the most popular university among young people.
It should be noted that the ranking is based on 14 criteria. Data sources include the results of university surveys and information from independent sources such as the official websites of federal bodies, Wikipedia, web analytics from Similarweb, data on the number of graduates holding managerial positions, data from social media subscribers, as well as scientometric data from Russia and other countries.
