ISU has entered the new ranking of the world’s top universities, published by the Times Higher Education agency
9 October 2024

Any university in the world can apply for participation in the ranking, but this university must meet certain criteria, including: conducting research in a wide range of scientific areas, having publications in highly ranked journals (at least a thousand scientific publications in the period from 2019 to 2023 and at least a hundred per year), offering undergraduate and graduate programs. Among the significant criteria are the proportion of foreign teachers and students, the citation of publications written by university staff, the academic reputation of the university.

The ranking includes higher education institutions from Europe, North America and Asia. This year, new universities from Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Syria, Paraguay, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Bahrain appeared in the ranking. The number of universities from India and Turkey has increased. In the world ranking, ISU is ranked in the 1501+ group, as is another Irkutsk university, INRTU, along with 56 other Russian higher education institutions. There are 81 Russian universities in the ranking, Moscow State University, ranking best among Russian universities, took 107th place.

ISU Rector, Professor Alexander Schmidt:

Irkutsk State University has been ranked among the best universities in the world for the fifth time in a row, which indicates the high reputation of the university and its scientific schools in the international academic community. Competition between universities increases every year, but the university has managed to maintain its place in the list of leading universities in the world. Getting into the ranking has not only reputational, but also applied significance: foreign students that apply to our university take the results of the ranking into account when choosing the university.
