Birthday of the Confucius Institute was held at ISU
1 October 2024

Lovers of the Chinese language and culture gathered in ISU Scientific Library to celebrate the Birthday of the Confucius Institute. The Open Day drew together not only the students and graduates of the Chinese Language Centre, but also those, who wish to start studying and looks for further educational opportunities.

Anna Khanakova, student:

I am 14 years old and it’s my second year of studying Chinese. I am studying, however, at the third level. I studied in another language school before, so it’s my first year of studying at the Confucius Institute. I plan to continue my studies in China, and it is here that a special test that should help me with admission is written. I really like China. I am learning Chinese because initially I liked hieroglyphs – beautiful writing. Chinese people are very interesting, nice, and it's easy for me to establish contacts with them.

The Chinese Language Center has prepared new activities and workshops specifically for the open day. Each of them is closely related to Chinese traditions: guests had an opportunity to participate in the tea ceremony, collect medicinal herbs sachets, weave a good luck charm and color a traditional fan. Each participant has memorabilia related to Chinese culture.

Svetlana Bayramova, Director of the Chinese Language Center “ISU Confucius Institute”:

The first Chinese language center was opened in Russia 20 years ago. And just three years later, the Confucius Institute at Irkutsk State University opened also in autumn. Our Chinese language center has been operating for 17 years. We admit students of all levels and give them the opportunity to take the HSK exam, the results of which are recognized worldwide. At the same time, we not only teach the language, but also give the basics of intercultural communication.

In addition to the workshops, various activities were available for the participants: the guests were taught how to use chopsticks and play folk games. The classes were conducted by teachers of the Confucius Institute, ISU international students helped with the organization.
