Fifteen students from the Law Institute of Irkutsk State University (ISU) participated in the summer language internship in Dalian, China, hosted by Liaoning Normal University.
For over two weeks, ISU representatives immersed themselves in Chinese language learning, cultural exploration and specialized courses on the social, political, and legal systems of China.
Ekaterina Varvarovskaya, Law Institute fourth-year student:
The goal of our internship was to deepen our knowledge and polish our practical language skills. My proficiency in spoken Chinese wasn’t acquired in vain. I am confident that the language practice and understanding the specifics of China's legal system create a unique specialist, enhance their competitiveness, and broaden not only their cultural horizons but also their prospects in the legal field.
The Law Institute offers internship programs with in-depth study of foreign languages in the fields of domestic and international law.
Valeria Zherbakova, Law Institute fourth-year student:
I suppose that knowledge of a foreign language is becoming a norm in the professional activities of a lawyer today. For instance, without proper qualifications, it is impossible to abstract international documents related to the activities of international cooperation organizations or to understand the meaning and content of foreign legal systems. I would like to emphasize that maintaining language skills plays a significant supportive and invigorating role when dealing with complex legal issues.
Proficiency in a foreign language not only allows a lawyer to utilize primary sources in their professional activities but also opens up career development opportunities: participation in international projects and programs, expanding the scope of legal work and pursuing master’s and doctoral studies.
