The 16th International Baikal Summer School on HEP and Astrophysics took place in the settlement Bolshiye Koty on July 8-15, 2016. This event is held annually by Irkutsk State University in partnership with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna.
More than 70 students and young specialists from Russian and European universities and research institutes (Irkutsk State University, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow Engineering and Technical University, Tomsk State University, Novosibirsk State University, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary)) were invited to take part in the school and attend lectures and workshops by scientist from the USA, the UK, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Portugal, France, Hungary, Chili, Poland, Slovakia and Russia.
The major purpose of the school is to provide students, postgraduates and young scientist with knowledge about contemporary aspects of elementary particle physics and astrophysics and to help young specialists advance their research projects.
The school program included lecture courses on modern elementary particle physics and astrophysics. In additions to the courses, there were workshops to consider and analyze the specific physics issues and tasks. There was also a special section for young scientist for them to present their individual projects.
Nikolai Budnev, the Dean of the Faculty of Physics, comments on:
- Students had a unique opportunity to communicate with outstanding scientists and the authors of textbooks, to get firsthand information about the current state of high energy physics. As for well-known scientists, they were able to share their experience with the youth and get the feedback. Participants’ success in future is supposed to be the main outcome of the event.
