The ISU Faculty of Physics is one of the oldest faculties at the University. It was founded in May 1919. Over the course of nearly a century the faculty has graduated more than 6,500 specialists in the fields of physics, radiophysics, and electronics. There are more than 100 doctors of science and 400 PhDs among its graduates. Presently, the Faмculty of Physics is comprised of six departments, graduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs, polygons, and observatories. Classes are conducted by highly qualified specialists, they are18 professors and doctors of science and 34 PhDs.

The most important principle of education at the faculty is “education through science”. In accordance with the principle, the students, which are interested in some scientific area, are actively involved in the researches that are conducted on unique installations Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS, are working on cutting-edge devices Institute of Geochemistry, Institute of Limnology and other institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences. At the faculty, the basic departments of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna), Solar-Terrestrial Physics and the Institute of Geochemistry SB RAS are founded. Special opportunities for development in practice the most modern technologies and method of measurements, work with computer networks, participation in theoretical and experimental studies are provided to students in the Applied Physics Institute of ISU. Students and graduates of the faculty make invaluable contributions to the establishment of the Baikal deepunderwater neutrino telescope NT1000 a cubic kilometer scale volume and construction of the world’s greatest gamma-ray observatory TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for Cosmic Ray Physics and Gamma-Astronomy), which is conducted in collaboration with leading Russian and German scientific organizations and universities in the “Center for Astrophysics Tunka Communities” Gamma-Ray Observatory TAIGA will represent a unique system of detectors , which will be the first in the world to begin exploration of the universe in a new range of ultra-high energies gamma rays. In the department of spectral analysis techniques of API, the students participate in the development of techniques and instruments that detect and identify malfunctions of any internal combustion engine on the presence and composition of tiny impurities in the oils of these engines.
