The Faculty of History and Philology was one of the first in the University. The training of philologists at the Irkutsk State University started in 1918 at the philology department of the Faculty of History and Philology. In 1926 the Buryat Philological Department joined the faculty. In 1961, the Department of Journalism appeared. In 1999, the Faculty of Philology was renamed the Faculty of Philology and Journalism.

The Faculty of Philology and Journalism as one of the oldest at the Irkutsk State University seeks to preserve the best classic traditions and help graduates find their place in the contemporary world.
