The Faculty of History was one the founding departments of the Irkutsk State University in 1918. The faculty of History and Philology was the first to start training students in October of 1918. At the time the famous professors of various research centers in Russia worked there. Later the faculty was transformed into the Faculty of History which became the leading center of humanities as well as social and political science in Eastern Siberia.
The faculty has five departments:
- Russian History;
- Contemporary Russian History;
- World History and International Relations;
- Archaeology, Ethnology and History of the Ancient World;
- Political Science and History.
Currently, 13 professors and doctors of science, 21 associate professors and 43 senior teachers
work at the faculty.
Students have the opportunity to combine their studies with their research work at the departments and research centers and laboratories of the faculty. There is a Center for Asian Pacific Studies, .F. Brodelya Center for European Studies, Paleoecology laboratory.
The faculty publishes three series in the ISU scientific journal - Izvestia Irkutskogo Gosudarstvennogo Universiteta - History, Political Science, Geo-archeology, Ethnology and Anthropology.
