The welcoming ceremony “Hello, ISU” was held at ISU scientific library named after V. Rasputin. Approximately 2500 people became participants of this event.

ISU acting rector, Prof. Alexander Schmidt, welcomed and congratulated new students:

-          Today you’ve become full-fledged students of Irkutsk State University. High school graduation, passing unified state examinations and entering university took place under various restrictions. That’s why you are special, and you will always be different from all other students. Upon entering our university, you take a new step of your life: an exciting world of science will open before you. I hope during the learning process at ISU you will  explore the world around. The university will support you in all of your undertakings. We believe in you, we hope you will be successful at your activities and make your Alma-Mater even more significant, famous and respectable. Let me congratulate you on a new milestone in your life! 

Ms. Margarita Tsyganova, ISU student’s union head, deans of the faculties and directors of institutes, Vice-rector for Education, Dr. Alexey Vokin, Vice-rector for Research and International Cooperation, Prof. Konstantin Grigorichev, congratulated students as well. ISU Youth Choir performed the student anthem “Gaudeamus”, art groups of the ISU Center for Culture made a bright performance for the public as well.

Special guests, including Mr. Sergey Yeroschenko, head of ISU board of trustees, Mr. Alexander Vedernikov, head of Legislative Assembly of Irkutsk region, Mr. Sergey Ten, State Duma deputy, Mr. Teymur Magomedov, acting deputy head of Irkutsk region government, Mr. Vladimir Dorofeev, acting deputy head of Irkutsk region governor, Prof. Igor Bychkov, scientific supervisor of Irkutsk Scientific Center of SB RAS, Mr. Vitaly Baryschnikov, deputy mayor, head of the Committee for social policy and culture under the Irkutsk city administration, welcomed first-year students.

First-year students shared their impressions:

Mr. Nikita Okrugin, student of ISU Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies:

-          I’m sure that Irkutsk State University will become a springboard for my future. I deliberately chose ISU to obtain bachelor degree. I guess, it would be more convenient and profitable to study in Irkutsk rather than in central Russian universities, because in the regions there are different people, a different society and relations. I suppose ISU has a friendly atmosphere and lecturers you can easily contact to. Here people treat you not as a figure, but as a friend. I believe I have more opportunities and prospects compared with other places.

Ms. Sanchirmaa Shivaashuuleg, student of ISU faculty of Psychology:

-          My father advised me to study at ISU. At first, for me it is studying abroad, secondly, it is not far from my home, only six hours away by car. One year ago I successfully completed ISU Pre-Degree Course, so I know Irkutsk, and I have become a little akin to it. Why ISU? Because only here I can get what I dream about, can realize my dream – since childhood I have wanted to be a psychologist, because I want to help people.

Mr. Andrew Kozyura, student of Siberian-American School of Management:

-          Irkutsk State University is nearby and I don’t have to go far from my homeland. ISU provides us with decent education and I’m sure that I will get the qualification I want.  I’m going to be a student of Bachelor and Master programs at ISU. And after that I will decide what to do next.
