The training of mathematicians at the Irkutsk State University started in 1919 at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. In 1965 the Mathematics Department was transformed into the Faculty of Mathematics. In 1971, the speciality of Applied Mathematics and special faculty of Applied Mathematics and Automated Control Systems for certified specialists were made available. In 1999, the faculty was reorganized into the Institute of Mathematics and Economics.
Since 2001, the Institute has been training students in Software Engineering and Computer Administration.
In April of 2005, the Institute of Mathematics and Economics (IME ISU) was renamed the Institute of Mathematics, Economics and Informatics (IMEI ISU).
The IMEI has a skilled team of professional lecturers and scientists:
- 25 doctors of science, professors;
- 68 candidates of science, associate professors;
- Academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and branch academies;
- Honored and Honorary Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation
- Leading mathematicians and programmers from the Irkutsk Scientific Center
